It was first used by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Many years ago, a French naturalist, the Count de Buffon, wrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics did not like them. Some critics said, "Count Buffon is more of a poet than a scientist." Thomas Jefferson did not like what the Count had said about the natural wonders of the New World. It seemed to Jefferson that the Count had gone out of his way to speak of natural wonders in America as if they were unimportant. III - a. 雑知識

Process of illumination One night, the erratic operation of our backyard sensor floodlights woke me up. There was no obvious cause so I put it down to a glitch in the sensor. But a few nights after that, the glitch returned. The lights came on and went off four or five times in succession, with no evident cause. When it happened again a couple of nights later, I got off of bed and headed for the override switch. On the way, I found the culprit. Our schnauzer dog Penny was on the veranda, busily snacking from her bowl in full floodlight. When the timer switched the lights off again she merely took a few paces, triggered the lights and went back to her dinner bowl in floodlit comfort. I've subsequently increased the time the light stays on so that Penny needs only to break the beam once - whenever she feels like indulging in a midnight snack. b. Staggering discovery One day I opened the door to find a distraught stranger holding our dog Ratz in his arms, with my two young sons standing behind him in tears. The man explained Ratz had run out in front of his car on a busy highway while my children were waiting to cross the road. We were unsure about the exact injury, so we laid Ratz on a soft bed in the lounge. After a close examination, we discovered he was limping and assumed he must have injured his paw. Other than that, he seemed fine. We let him sleep in the lounge room for two night, keeping him warm and piling him with tender loving care. On the third morning, I glanced through the glass doors into the lounge room. Much to my amazement, Ratz was walking around normally, not a limp in sight. Marching into the room, I was about to tell him his game was up. However, the moment I was walked in, Ratz dropped onto his belly and began dragging himself along the floor, as if he could not walk. He was milking it to get sympathy. The look on his face would have melted anyone's heart. c. My five-year-old daughter, Madison, decided one morning that she wanted to make herself breakfast. Seeing how proud she was to get the cereal and milk, I said to her, "Oh, Madison, you are growing up so fast. Here you are, making your own breakfast. I guess you don't need your mum anymore." To which she replied with a hug, "Don't worry, Mum, I still need you for toast." |
